A friend of mine has a four-year-old granddaughter with leukemia, this is for them. I love you Steve and Emily!
When Emily Smiles
Emily sits on grandpas lap the minute he sits down.
He holds her close and does his best to try and change her frown.
With an angel’s face looking up at him through big, deep blue eyes.
He smiles at her but can’t stop his tears no matter how he tries.
She’s weak today, she rest her head so gently on his chest.
He knows though she’s not well today, this is one of her best.
She holds his heart completely, this precious, aged soul.
She came to him not long ago and made his life seem whole.
She’ll leave him soon even though the doctors did their best.
He says that God is testing him and God knows he hates test.
Leukemia will claim her life at the tender age of four
and grandpa prays everyday; please God, give her more.
The time he’s had with Emily could never be enough,
Sweet Emily knows that soon she’ll leave , she is so very tough.
She wakes with cough, his tears drip soft, there’s nothing he can do.
She smiles at him, he smiles to her and says “dear I love you.”
She handles this so gracefully; she has a special style.
Grandpa’s heart breaks every time, when he sees Emily smile.

NOTE: This is as I published it in 2002. However, this story has a happy ending…Emily has survived and is now a happy 9 year old whose cancer is still in remission. 🙂
