Common Buckeye

Common Buckeye

Besides the Satyrs and Wood-Nymphs, Buckeye butterflies (Junonia coenia Hübner, [1822] ) are one of the few types of brush-footed butterflies with distinctive eye patterns on the wings. Wing span: 1 5/8 – 2 3/4 inches (4.2 – 7 cm).

The Common Buckeye deserves its name. Except for areas of the extreme Pacific Northwest, it ranges across the United States.

There are two other Buckeye species. The Mangrove Buckeye is found primarily in Florida. The Tropical Buckeye is found primarily in the Southwest.
